GENERAL

What is eTwinning?
eTwinning is an action that supports online-based projects between at least two schools from at least two different European countries. Schools form a project and use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to carry out their work. As schools communicate and collaborate via the Internet, there are no grants or administrative conditions connected to the scheme and face-to-face meetings are not required.

What can I do in an eTwinning project?
You can work on any topic you and your partner wish to work on. Projects should have a good balance of ICT use and classroom activities, and should preferably fit into the national curricula of the schools participating in the project.

Do I need to be an advanced ICT user to be involved?
Definitely not! One of the objectives of eTwinning is to improve teachers’ abilities in ICT and to make it part of daily life in the classroom. eTwinning caters to all levels of ICT knowledge.

Who can participate?
An eTwinning project can be carried out by two or more teachers, teams of teachers or subject departments, librarians, head teachers and pupils from schools across Europe. Collaboration can be within the same subject or cross-curricular through the use of ICT.
Pre-school, primary, secondary and upper secondary schools can all participate (age range of pupils, 3-19).

Which countries are part of eTwinning?
eTwinning applies to the Member States of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Overseas territories and countries are also eligible. In addition, Norway and Iceland can also take part.

Other countries, including Croatia and Turkey, cannot yet officially take part in eTwinning.

REGISTRATION

What happens when I register for eTwinning?
You received a login and password, which enables you to access your personal eTwinning Desktop (see Tools FAQ) where you can use a number of tools to find partners, communicate with schools and start a project.

What happens when I register an eTwinning project?
You receive a project “TwinSpace” which is a private online workspace. The TwinSpace is accessible to you and your partner(s) as administrators. You can then invite your students to have access as members. You also received an official eTwinning Label which can you also access in your Desktop.

Which language should I use?
When you register to the eTwinning Portal, you may use whichever language as all information is translated. However, when it comes to your project idea, don’t hesitate to use a commonly used language (e.g., English, French, German) or many languages. This information is not translated, so its up to you to make it as easy for other schools to understand you.

I am now registered, but can’t find my school using the TwinFinder. Why?
This is normal! The TwinFinder is set up for you to find partners; therefore no schools from your own country (including yours) will appear in your search. If you want to check that your school is in the system, you can find it on the eTwinning Map.

How do I register my project?
Add your partner to your ‘My Candidates’ section. In ‘My Candidates’, click on the ‘Twin Up’ icon which appears next to your partner’s name. Fill in the form (NB: Only one partner should fill out the form). Once you have sent the form, your partner will receive a message asking him/her to accept your request (to accept your request, your partner must login to his/her Desktop and follow the instructions). Once accepted, the information is sent to both National Support Services who will then approve/reject the project within 7 days. You will receive a notification and can begin working from that moment.

To add more partners to your project, follow the same procedure, but instead of creating a new partnership by filling out the form, simply add them to your existing project.

Is it possible to be involved in many projects at the same time?
Yes, but you have to indicate this when you register your school. Check the box “Open to multiple twinning projects” in the registration step of eTwinning preferences.

My partner and I would like to register another project. How do we do this?
To add a new project to an existing partnership, simply go to ‘Profile’ / ‘Manage your projects’, and click on the ADD button to add a new project through on online form. NB: If you are no longer working on your first project, you can close it in this same section.

SEARCHING FOR PARTNERS

How do I find partners for my project?
Use the “TwinFinder” in your Desktop to search for partners. You can combine different search criteria to narrow down the results. Contact schools using the “Chat” function, as well as the “Partner-Finding Forum to post and answer messages.

TIP: When contacting potential partners, be sure to consider giving information in a commonly used language (e.g., English, French or German) or in multiple languages.

How many partners can participate in the same project?
There is no limit to the number of partners in a project; however, be careful not to have too many partners as you run the risk of losing track of your activities.

Where can I see the schools from my country registered for eTwinning?
Go to the eTwinning Map, select your country and a list of registered schools and partnerships involving schools from your country will appear.

WORKING TOGETHER

What is the TwinSpace?
The TwinSpace is a platform for schools can use to work together on their project. Each project has its own private TwinSpace available from the Desktop for partners and from the Portal homepage for invited members.

The TwinSpace offers a number of tools for collaboration and communication, including a private chat room open 24/7 (e.g., your pupils can chat with their partners even after school in a safe online environment), a mailbox, forums and a calendar. The project can also store materials in folders and file archives and use the TwinSpace to exchange information between teachers and pupils.

Project partners are automatically administrators of the TwinSpace. Pupils – and even other teachers and colleagues – can then be invited to become members of the TwinSpace. If you would like, you can also upgrade the members you invite to administrators (e.g., if you would like your pupils to be responsible for the structure and uploading of items).

How do I access my project TwinSpace? How do my students access it?

As a project partner, you access your TwinSpace through your Desktop. Your students access the TwinSpace directly from www.etwinning.net using their usernames and passwords.

What languages can I use in my project?
You are free to choose; it’s up to you and your partner(s). Information on the eTwinning Portal and its tools is available in 21 languages (NB: this can be helpful for your pupils when navigating through the TwinSpace).

I have been working with another school on a project. For some reason, I can no longer get a hold of him/her and my emails go unanswered. What do I do?
Try to contact the school by using various communication channels (not only by email but also by telephone or fax) to find out what happened. Be patient: there may be several reasons why the communication stopped (holidays, busy exam period, illness, etc.) Try to understand the situation so that you can do your best to continue your project. As a last option, contact your NSS to see if they can help you.

TECHNICAL ISSUES

I forgot my password. What do I do?
Click on “Forgot your password?” in the login box of the Portal’s homepage. Insert the email address that you used for registration and hit “submit”. You will then receive your login data and a new password.

One of my pupils has forgotten his password to the TwinSpace. How do I retrieve this information?
If you used your pupil’s email address when you invited him, insert the address in the “Forgot your password?” window and he will receive his new password. In case you used a fictional email address when you invited him, you will have to re-invite him to the TwinSpace.

TIP: when you invite your pupils to the TwinSpace, keep a separate file with the usernames and passwords.

We’ve tried to change the data of the contact person in our Profile. Now, neither the old contact nor the new contact can login. What do we do?
You can get your login data by clicking on “Forgot my password” in the login box. Follow the same procedure as if you had forgotten your password.

I am no longer working at my school. How do I remove myself from the Portal?
If you are no longer working in a school, you can remove yourself from the list by logging into your Desktop, going to ‘Profile’ and deactivate your account.

I have changed schools and would like to transfer my profile to my new school.
If you have changed schools, you can deactivate the profile of your first school and then create a new school connection through your Desktop: Profile / Manage your user profile / Manage your school’s profile.

Where do I find more information about the eTwinning Tools?

AWARDS

What is the eTwinning Label?
The eTwinning Label is granted to projects that are approved by the National Support Services in the countries of the schools taking part. Schools submitting a partnership receive the eTwinning Label no later than one week after registering.

What is the Quality Label?
The Quality Label is awarded at national level. While the eTwinning Label is something project partners received automatically when their project is approved, the Quality Label is something you must apply for. If you have run a successful project and think it is worthy of a Quality Label, fill out the form available in your Desktop under ‘Labels’. Your National Support Service will then evaluate your submission. For more information, click here.

What is the European Quality Label?
The European Quality Label is awarded at European level. If you and at least one of your other project partners (in case you are more than two) has received a Quality Label, you then receive a European Quality Label. This Label is awarded twice a year by the Central Support Service.

What are eTwinning Prizes?
European eTwinning Prizes are awarded to schools that have run high quality eTwinning projects. There are three age categories: 4-10, 11-15 and 16-19 years old. Submissions for the European Prize competition takes place in the autumn for projects running during the year before. Awards are presented to winners at the annual eTwinning Conference which takes place during the following spring.

eTwinning Prizes are also awarded at national level. To see how your country runs its prize activities, contact your National Support Service.

EVENTS

What are Professional Development Workshops? How can I participate?
The information concerning the eTwinning Professional Development Workshops can be found on the eTwinning website. These workshops are organised in various European countries and their aim is to introduce teachers to the eTwinning projects and to help them find partners abroad.

If you would like to participate in one of the workshops, contact your NSS for more information.

What is the annual eTwinning Conference?
The annual eTwinning Conference takes place in the springtime (between February and March). The main purpose of the conference is to discuss the past and future of eTwinning and celebrate success through the eTwinning Prize awards ceremony.

Participants to the conference are chosen by the National Support Service in each country.
