Have fun while learning!
Erik Jacquemyn, CEO of Technopolis, the Flemish science centre in Belgium, has been interviewed on the role of science museums and experiments in education. In October, Technopolis provided the setting for the launch of Xplora, the European science education portal.

Erik Jacquemyn points at three main issues in education that science museums can support:

  • Education does not only take place at school: Informal learning takes place when exploring on your own!
  • Science museums enable children to learn while doing fun scientific experiments. The mission statement of Technopolis catches this: “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand”.
  • Museums help illustrate to children that science is fun and part of every day life. Museums help get rid of the image in education that science is dull and theoretical.

The interview elaborates on these issues, and also lists the favourite experiments of children visiting the museum. If you are a science teacher, get inspired to eTwinning activities with schools in other countries.
