Apply for the eTwinning Quality Label
A new feature to eTwinning is the Quality Label. This label is granted to teachers of excellent eTwinning projects. It indicates that the project has reached a certain national and European standard. Therefore, there are two labels: the National Quality Label and the European Quality Label.

To understand its purpose and how to get the Label, read this interview with Anne Gilleran, Pedagogical Manager at European Schoolnet.

European Labels December 2006

1. What is the Quality Label?

The national Quality Label is awarded by the National Support Services to those schools whose work within an eTwinning partnership is considered to be excellent in their country. The European Quality Label is awarded by the Central Support Service to schools in a partnership where these have been awarded with the National Quality Label and where the projects are considered excellent from a European point of view.

2. What are the benefits of the Quality Label?

The Quality Label is recognition to teachers and schools of the high level of their eTwinning activities. This gives personal satisfaction and concrete recognition of work. For pupils, a boost to their work efforts, and for the school in general, a public affirmation of their commitment to quality and openness in European collaborative work.

3. Who can get the Quality Label?

Any school involved in eTwinning can apply to be considered for a Quality Label on an eTwinning project they are involved in.

4. How many Quality Labels can a school get?

A school can be awarded one national Quality Label per eTwinning project. The same applies for the European Quality Label. For projects running for more than a year, teachers decide when in the project’s lifespan to apply for the Label.

5. How do you get the Quality Label?

You need to apply for the Quality Label to the National Support Service in your country. This takes place through the Labels section of the eTwinning Desktop, where you have to describe different aspects of your project to justify your application for the Label. As the Quality Label is granted to a particular project, the application for it is also related to one particular project. When applying, you need to choose the relevant project from the list of your projects (if you have more than one). The list appears in the Labels section on the Desktop.

6. Who grants the Quality Label and are there any application deadlines?

In each country, the National Support Service (NSS) evaluates applications from schools for the national Quality Label. The National Support Service grants their Quality Label to the school, and if all schools in a partnership are awarded with their national Label, then the Central Support Service (CSS) will grant the project the European Quality Label as well.

The National Support Services award the Label throughout the year. In some countries, deadlines are fixed so teachers should consult their National Support Service for information. Once the application is accepted or rejected, the National Support Service will write a short comment to explain its decision.

If both schools in the partnership are awarded their national Label, then the schools involved get the European Quality Label, awarded by the Central Support Service. This Label will be awarded twice a year (probably May and November).

7. Which criteria have to be met with in order to get the Quality Label?

A project has to broadly achieve excellence in the following criteria:

  • Sustainability
  • Use of ICT within the project
  • Results and benefits
  • Curricular integration
  • European dimension
  • Innovation/creativity
  • Overall quality

8. What does it look like and are there any restrictions on how a school can use it?

The Quality Label will take the form of an electronic certificate which can be displayed on the web site of the school. The certificate will also be visible next to the school in the map accessible from the entry page of the portal.
