Overview

The eTwinning portal is dedicated to the privacy of its users. Our intention is to provide a secure and safe environment for schools and teachers. The following statement outlines the policies by which the eTwinning portal collects, manages, and uses the data provided to us by users. Use of the eTwinning site indicates you have read these policies and agree to abide by them.

Data are collected about schools and school personnel in order to set up collaborative projects between schools in Europe.

Information collection

The information collected and stored by the eTwinning portal will be stored on machines in Austria. Using the eTwinning portal amounts to consent to the transfer of information within the European Union.

To serve its users as best as possible, the eTwinning portal makes mandatory the following information:

  • Registrant data: name, surname, occupation, if teacher subject taught, language/s spoken, email
  • School data: school's name, type, address, town, postal code, country
  • Headmaster's details: name, surname, email, language/s spoken

The following areas are optional:

  • School data: region, school number, telephone number, fax number, mail address, web site, teacher’s weblog/personal site, team-teaching experience
  • School profile: number of pupils, age range, geographical area, already involved in school collaboration, other on going European projects, tools available for collaboration, experience with online collaboration, Video/audio conferencing Tools available, experience with conferencing tools, Internet connection bandwidth
  • Twinning preferences: subjects/themes/topics of interest, communication language(s), open to multiple twinning projects

Information access

During the registration process, users will be asked to specify a unique username and corresponding password. Through this username/password combination, users may access their account and use the restricted area of the site.
Registered schools will be allowed to access, modify and delete the information provided at any time by logging.

Use of collected information

Aggregate statistics are collected regularly, including, but not limited to, the number of users during a specific period, the preferred subjects and/or countries chosen by teachers, and account usage.

In an effort to maximize user experience, the eTwinning portal may keep track of user frequency, habits, preferences and settings. Access to this information is strictly limited to the European Commission, education ministries and authorities in charge of implementing eTwinning. The eTwinning team will not divulge your personal data for direct marketing purposes.

The eTwinning team will have access to provided account information and can modify and/or delete information as needed to maintain the integrity of the user database.

Information such as user IP address, internet service provider (ISP), web browser, operating system, approximate times of use, referring site, and any similar data exchanged between a user's computer and the servers of the eTwinning portal is collected on an aggregate basis, and, unless initiated by a specific user account, no method exists to tie this information to a particular user account. This information is accessible only to the systems administrators within the eTwinning team and is used to ensure the broadest sense of compatibility and connectivity between users and the eTwinning portal.

Length of data storage

The eTwinning team only keeps the data until the end of 2013.

Site security

The eTwinning portal has implemented and continues to maintain appropriate technical and management measures to keep your personal information secure and safe from loss, damage, corruption, or deletion.
