Art Nouveau in Prague and Brussels
Art teachers from two different countries (Czech Republic and Belgium) decide to work on the topic of Art Nouveau in their respective countries together with their students.

Aim:

  • to bring a wider and more interesting perspective to the curriculum in the Art class through the eTwinning action
  • to realise what the similarities and the differences are between Art nouveau styles in two different cities.

Who is involved:

Two Art teachers from two different countries (Czech Republic and Belgium) decide to work on the topic of Art Nouveau  in their respective countries together with their students.

Language:

French is the language chosen for the project as Czech secondary school students have a good command of it.

Pedagogical objectives for students:

  • to learn what Art Nouveau is about;
  • to find out more examples of it in their country (visit museums and other Art Nouveau sites);
  • to discover its existence in another country;
  • to learn to take and use digital pictures;
  • to learn to use the ICT tools that the eTwinning site offers;
  • to learn to communicate and to collaborate with partners abroad.

Process

  1. Both teachers and students know how to use the eTwinning site and they know how to use the word processing programme, email software and Internet before starting the project
  2. Partners agree on a time frame, age range of students (secondary level is recommended in this case), number of participants, technologies and materials they will use
  3. Teachers prepare the project together
  4. They explain the idea and the way of working to their students
  5. Students collect material (take pictures of various elements of the Art Nouveau style, visit museums and galleries in their town, look for Internet resources) and organise it. The students may work together in class in pairs or in groups
  6. Teachers monitor all their work and decide together with their students on what should be shared with foreign partners and translated
  7. Students in two countries discuss materials sent by their counterparts. They compare common features (e.g. floral and vegetal motifs) and agree on the differences (e. g. Brussels – more in architecture, Prague – more in interior design).
  8. Finally, both teachers (helped by students) decide on what should be displayed on the eTwinning site and shared with the rest of Europe in the form of a comparative virtual gallery displaying pictures and short descriptions provided by students
