Recycling in our City
Partners carry out a survey on recycling in their city. They put the results into graphs, comment on them and suggest solutions for the future.

Summary of Activities

Teachers create groups of three pupils and subdivide the roles of each pupil (a reporter, a photographer and a webmaster). During Weeks 2-4, each group carries out the following tasks:

  • Writing an introductory message (one per group of three)
  • Interviewing a given number of individuals in their town
  • Taking pictures relevant to the topic
  • Compiling the results and putting them into graphs in Excel
  • Uploading the Excel files into the TwinSpace
  • Discussing their partners’ results and writing a conclusion (one per class)
  • Suggesting what could be improved in their towns and in general
  • Writing a summary of the project and uploading all Excel files, suggestions and pictures from interviews on TwinSpace using File Archives and the Photo Gallery.
  • Showing the project results to other people at school as well as in the local community and telling them about the project.

Week 1

Each trial project can benefit from a TwinSpace (we recommend reading the guidelines). Teachers get to know each other by exchanging internal messages, sharing ideas and adapting the project kit to their needs (subject, age group, skills, etc.). They learn to use the tools needed for the project or find a colleague to help. They also explain the project to their class.

In this first week, teachers “invite” their pupils (in teams of three) to the TwinSpace so that the pupils can eventually use the safe internal messaging system to discuss questions about recycling (no more than 10 questions) and interview people (no more than 30 persons).

Week 2

Pupils work in groups of three. Reporters are mainly responsible for editing texts, photographers for taking pictures and webmasters for dealing with technical issues.

First, pupils write an introductory message about their group on the TwinSpace. Each group interviews a certain number of individuals in their town about recycling. They ask questions agreed upon with their partners. Photographers take pictures.

The results are entered into an Excel spreadsheet and made into graphs. Excel files are then uploaded into the TwinSpace.

TIP:
To organise all texts, data, presentations and photos on the TwinSpace, decide together in advance how you can best name and arrange all ‘folders’ and corresponding ‘file archives’ and ‘photo galleries’.
You can do this by partner, theme, type of document, etc. The important thing is to agree on a structure and stick to it.

Week 3

In a special ‘Forum’ created within the TwinSpace, partners discuss the results and write one conclusion per class. As all discussion comments are documented, they then analyse the results of the discussion and suggest what could be improved in their towns and in general.

Live real time discussions can also take place during this week using the “Chat” tool on the TwinSpace or a video conferencing tool. For this, pupils are responsible for taking notes.

TIP:
If you would like to use a simple and safe video conferencing tool, we recommend that you use FlashMeeting, which eTwinning schools can use for free.
To use this programme in your project, simply write an email to Thomas Maier.

Week 4

A summary of the project, together with Excel files, suggestions and pictures from interviews are uploaded on the TwinSpace using ‘File Archives’ and the ‘Photo Gallery’ for pictures). The project outcomes are displayed, presented and discussed in each school.

To close the project, pupils write a farewell email to their partners by using the TwinSpace messaging system.

If all goes well, the teachers can then decide to start a new project with their partner. Read the guidelines to find out how to set up a new project.
