European decision-making role play
Three partner classes work together to role play the process by which decisions are taken in the European Union. A list of themes is provided for the partners to choose one and decide on a common issue to reflect and work on. All the classes play the role of Commissioners, Members of the European Parliament and Ministers of the EU member countries. Students draft a proposal which turns into a final decision when the process is finalized, in the same way this is done in the European Union. To be able to do this, you can use the Decide4Europe step-by-step game.

Age: 13-18

Duration: One school year

ICT Tools: Decide4Europe game (Internet flash website), eTwinning TwinSpace, videoconferencing, podcasting.

Subjects: Cross-curriculum

Objectives

  • To foster the European dimension in education.
  • To learn about the decision-making process in the EU.
  • To diversify learning through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
  • To use ICT to create, communicate and share.

Pedagogical value

The decision-making role play was originally created by European Schoolnet for Spring Day in Europe 2005. Many European schools participated in the role play and learned about the European Union and its institutions by simulating their work in the classroom.

The activity aims to make the decision-making process as real as possible, so that pupils learn about Europe’s contribution to their daily lives.
