Our Green World and it’s a project about ecology. It has to do with protecting the environment and having environmental awareness. At the same time it will promote outdoor learning by learning how to grow plants in school gardens. Pupils will develop entrepreneur skills by selling plants and seeds to buy school equipment. • At the beginning of the project pupils will exchange photos and evaluations of their school outdoor environment and local area as an introduction.
• Pupils will comment on their school environment giving reasons for what they like/don’t like and what could be improved with emphasis on improving learning opportunities and creating a sustainable environment
• Throughout the project pupils from the participating schools will exchange ideas and information on all activities and will work together on one major aspect of the project e.g. growing plants to eat or heal
2. Planning then implementing activities to promote outdoor learning
• School gardens will be used to develop Science skills and understanding e.g. studying soil and plant growth
• School gardens will be used to grow food organically
• Plants with medicinal properties will be grown e.g. lavender and camomile
• School grounds will be used to watch nature e.g. life cycle of frog in conservation area pond
• Forest school skills will be developed
• Eco school skills will be developed e.g. collection of rainwater for plants, composting dead plant material to enrich the soil
• Children will learn about the link between farms and shops and be able to answer the question: – where does the food on your plate come from?
3. Developing entrepreneur skills in pupils
• Pupils will use the school gardens to grow plants to sell

• Pupils will grow food for the school canteen and cookery club
• Pupils will use Art and Design skills to create their own plant pots, labels, scarecrows, living furniture etc.
• Pupils will design areas of the school environment e.g. sensory garden, a garden for wheelchair users
4. To develop the idea of sustainability
• Pupils will consider the question ‘What do I need to survive?’ and use recycled objects e.g. tyres to grow food in
• Pupils will learn to reduce, reuse and recycle e.g. by composting, by making plant pots from old newspapers, by saving seeds
• Pupils will consider ways to save earth’s resources e.g. save rainwater to water plants
• Pupils will research and plant native plants to encourage wildlife
• Pupils will monitor the school buildings for energy use, water use and waste disposal/recycling
5. To involve the wider community
• Pupils will involve the wider community e.g. surveys to find out what people think of the local environment, plant sales to raise money for equipment
• Pupils will be involved in a project outside school e.g. planning a garden or window box for an elderly care home
• Local residents will be invited to help with the school gardens and Conservation Area hide
