“The Bible is, from a marketing standpoint, a publishing miracle and remains one of the bestselling books in the world. It's been printed in every language, in every country, and remains a fixture of hotel nightstands in every corner of the world.” , reported CBS News correspondent Lee Cowan.
“ For any educated person, it's absolutely essential to know about the Bible. Whether a person is a believer or not, the Bible stands at the foundation of our form of civilization," adds Bart Ehrman, a University of North Carolina professor.
The Bible's influence is impossible to ignore in the European character, arquitecture, art…. There are more than a thousand biblical references in the works of Shakespeare alone. Then there's Rembrandt, Chagall and Da Vinci, who all put the Bible on canvas.
The Bible is present in contemporary popular culture as well, in music, sitcoms, interpersonal relationships, legal principles, even in fashion design. Movies like “ The Passion”, "The Matrix" , are full of Biblical references that young people fail to understand. And why Because of little or no direct contact to Bible texts in their daily routines. The Bible is so much present in our European society but, in a strange way, also ignored at the same time.
Water, like the Bible, is present in our daily lives but we miss to see how important it is and to what extent its reduction may put our lives at risk.
The scarcity of clean, drinkable freshwater is a growing global issue. Without clean water, survival of human race is at risk. Not all of us are aware that freshwater water is a finite resource or even grateful for having in large quantities in our countries.
The United Nations General Assembly, in December 2003, proclaimed the years 2005 to 2015 as the International Decade for Action "Water for Life".
Also the international exhibition in Saragoza, Spain, from 14th June to 14th September 2008, focused the topic water and its impact in our lives. The exhibition on Water and Sustainable Development included a pavilion which presented to the public the theme ”Living Water” inspired in the Talk of Jesus to the Samaritan woman in the Gospel of John, chapter 4.
Water is time after time present in the Old and New Testaments in contexts that are familiar to our students ( drinking, cleaning, emotional purposes) but also in less unknown contexts, namely with spiritual purpose.
Bible and water are closely connected to life/Life and it is our responsibility to conserve them and pass them on to the future generations.
In this new edition of AcrossTheBible across Europe we decided to take a small step to answer this need of awareness on both the Bible and Clean Water on earth. We intend with this eTwinning project to focus on the water topic in our approach to Bible texts and link them up as far as possible to water concerns and develop if possible greater awareness to the central character of both Bible and Water in our civilization. -------
Founders of the AtB water project are the schools D.Dinis-Lisbon, Portugal (T.Fernandes), Dimitrie Anghel Schule-Cornesti Miroslawa, Romaia (Dorina Marin) and the Peter-Petersen-School-Frankfurt/Main, Germany (Irene Szymanski). These schools and teachers go on with a successful three-year AtB partnership.

How could a connection to Bible texts be reached among young people
What does Water for Life imply in everyday, scientific, spiritual terms?
How far do people care for water as part of God’s creation, as common global responsibility?
How can greater awareness be raised among young people relating a sustainable development with fresh water for everybody?
What familiar and less familiar (spiritual) meanings of ‘water’ are passed on
to us in the Bible?
In order to:
- reduce Biblical illiteracy among young people
- foster acquaintance with several meanings of water in the Bible, familiar and unfamiliar ones
- raise greater awareness relating the present water situation in their own country/ in other parts of the world
- take action relating the common mandate of caring for the planet and the moral obligation to make fresh water available for everybody

- Proceso de trabajo: Water is essential to life on earth, it is not the property of a few people but a common good... más informaciónWater is essential to life on earth, it is not the property of a few people but a common good of all mankind, something we are all to be grateful for and also responsible for.
In the Bible we learn about the both life-giving and also destructive power of water.
We learn about different spiritual meanings of water.
Water is present from Genesis to Revelation in common or less common daily routines, in conflicts and fights due to scarcity or drought, also in floods, calamity situations that lead to personal or general distress, in fights much similar to problems of the 21st century.
Also special spiritual meanings of ‘water’ are presented in the Bible. We learn that the word can be used as a metaphor, in comparisons, making people aware of abstract, spiritual realities that, like water, are also of crucial importance to people’s lives.
The linguistic and artistic handling of Old and New Testaments texts on water will go along with reports, documentaries on current water issues.
Each school will get to know and illustrate water Bible texts and also get information about present day water scarcity. We want to reflect on Old and New Testament texts that tell us about water and its different meanings and will try to find links of concern to water issues today.
Some steps:
- making a common plan about where and what is told about water in the Bible ( list of water related contexts in the Old and New Testaments)
- going online to collect information about water issues in our countries/abroad
- creating pictures combined with English/the languages of the partner schools/countries
( each school is free to choose different texts from the Old and New Testament and work with them)
Alternative work according to age group:
- younger kids (primary school class 1 to 6) in the project make water-experiments which they show to the other project members
- older kids (class 7 to 12/13) search for parallels of their Bible stories - reports of 21st century situations

(posters/ collages/powerpoints)
- maintenance of a Bible garden in each partner school as a visible way to recall the Creator’s mandate and raise other people’s awareness
- exchange of the research results on the topic and of the Bible texts illustrations by publishing them in the twinspace and in the schools atb-project websites/ blogs /schoolwebsite
- collecting the pictures of all water-stories and texts creating school/country puzzles, and finally one big common etwinning Bible Water puzzle with the stories and, if possible, some 21st 'parallels', f.ex. Noah and the big Flood associated to floods nowadays
