The theme of the project is based on the problems of mistreated, abandoned dogs and cats in Ploiesti and Fuerteventura: the people who work in council kennels or associations for the protection of animals need volunteers to walk the animals, to take care of the area, to grow trees and plants. Dogs and cats are abandoned because people are not conscious that animals are a responsability for life. Dogs to hunt or dogs of a dangerous breed are also abandoned because their owners don't want to spend a cent looking after them. Cats are not neutered so more and more cats grow and are stray in the island. There are some kennels where animals are not sacrified but, unluckily, most of them are obliged to do that by law. Owing to the international economic crisis things are getting much worse because the numb er of abandoned animals is growing. One of the most urgent aims of the project is to make students and people in general conscious about the terrible situation of these animals so that we all can do something about it.

Starting Activities For teachers: Initially teachers can plan to meet in the TwinSpace and decide about the activities they will like to do with students, the method and the tools that they will use. At this stage, the individual objectives of the project and the kind of evaluation process will be determined. For students: - In order to get the students to know each other and have them easily divided into groups one ice-breaking activities can be: the teachers devise a profile sheet which the students will have to fill in with some details about themselves and upload to the TwinSpace. This will make them familiar with the use of the TwinSpace and they will be able to explore its possibilities. - The students can learn about the aims and objectives of the project and can be introduced to the ways they can do research. If the research includes the use of Internet resources, we will give them the relevant guidelines on the effective research of resources. 2. Follow up activities - Volunteer members of associations for the protection of animals can visit the school so that they can explain the problems of animals to the students. - The students, in groups, will make an interview to volunteer members of associations related to animals or to people from their background to find out about the attitude of society to this problem. - The students will gather information and data about this theme with other online students and teachers. - They will visit the council kennel, animal shelters in the island, etc. - With the information that they have gathered, they will make online posters, drawings, Power Points in collaboration with their European partners. hide
