Andreja Dobnikar
Subjects: Ethics,History of Culture,Language and Literature Languages: - DE - SL - I am a professor of Slovenian language and history, working at Elementary School Brezovica in Ljubljana since 2004, teaching Slovenian language. Already in the first year I taught a student who was Albanian by nationality, came to Slovenia in the beginning of the school year. A student was one year older than classmates and did not speak Slovenian. Also due to the his appearance - a very dark complexion - he often was refused by other classmates. For me this represented an additional burden, as working with students, "migrants" was nowhere required by law and the decision for further work with them was every ones individual matter. I had the opinion that this was probably an isolated case and I will not have any further contacts with these kind of students in the future. However I was wrong. Such students were more and more. I began to realize that students from a migrant background were more than we dare admit, and that legally they were not protected. Therefore working with them became a challenge for me. I began to monitor their life stories and gave them the possibility to assist as close as possible in the integration into the Slovenian language and cultural environment. After talking with my colleagues, I found out that most of them were thinking very narrow, since their aim was that a student (in school), should assimilate and not integrate. In 2006 I first attended an expert seminar, which was aimed to teach children whose first language was not Slovenian. This seminar gave me a new impetus and I realized I will have to study more of literature to overcome the problems. I will have to examine as much as possible of the literature in this area and will have to undergo further subsequent education. That's what I did. Now I would like to upgrade my knowledge in the eTwinning project, and would also like to attend at contact seminars for teachers, teaching native languages in Slavic countries. I believe that the mentioned seminar will enabled me to meet colleagues from other countries and thereby help me to find partner schools who are interested in teaching practice in the use of modern technologies in education. |
