“Mobility is the key to enhancing the quality of teaching”

picture

Paul Holdsworth - from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Education and Culture - tells eTwinning how mobility projects and in-service training are essential for complementing teachers’ professional development.

“Teachers’ education should be considered a lifelong learning process, during which teachers are required to update their skills, so they can provide pupils with renewed ones” says Paul Holdsworth.

“Existing in-service trainings still have to be improved, as they are not always addressing teachers’ real needs” continues Holdsworth, mentioning that ICT remains one of the biggest gaps in adult education.

The recommendations of the European Commission in 2007 and the subsequent agreement of European ministries of education stress how mobility plays a vital role in improving teacher education. “In particular, a group approach seems to have a higher impact,” adds Holdsworth.
