What do you feel?

This activity helps pupils understand each other through music. Pupils exchange music and write down their spontaneous feelings.

Age group: 5-18 years
Level:         Intermediate
Duration:    2 hours
ICT Tools:  Audacity or any other sound processing software, TwinSpace forum, paint software

Pedagogical objectives

On successful completion of this activity pupils will be able to:
  • use ICT tools and the TwinSpace forum
  • get to know their foreign partners through their musical tastes
  • express themselves
  • understand foreign cultures through music

Process

Step1
Each school decides on the music and the lyrics that would like to send to their partner. Pupils record the songs using Audacity or any other software for sound processing. An alternative could be to select songs recorded and sung by famous artists and send them directly to the partners.

Step 2
Pupils decide on the questions to pose to their partners. For example:

  1. What feelings do you have when listening to these songs?
  2. What ideas come to mind when listening to these songs?
  3. What would you like to do while listening to this music?
  4. Where and with whom would you like to be?
  5. What images come to mind when you listen to this music?
  6. Are these songs similar to others you have heard? If so, which one(s)?

Step 3
Pupils ask their partners to draw on a piece of paper the first image that comes to mind when listening to these songs or to come up their own lyrics to the given music. The results are then discussed in the TwinSpace forum.

For example:

A pupil when listening to a flamenco song wrote: “The feelings that I have are: sadness, happiness and a little boredom. But it is good! The music is danced with the hands and the legs and it has a very real sound!” The pupil then included the following picture that he had drawn.

Outcomes

Having learned about their partners’ musical interests, as well as their culture, pupils are ready for further activities and can better keep in mind that they have differences of culture between – as well as similarities. This gives them a better sense of their partners for future project work.
