Walking pattern tour
| As an easy way to introduce each other’s cultures, as well as including the subject matter of the project (in this case, geometry), pupils from each school organise a walking tour of their town, taking photos and measurements which are then shared and discussed with their partners online. |
Age Group: 13 - 15 years Level: Medium Duration: 2 weeks ICT tools: TwinSpace, Audacity, digital camera, graphic software, open source dynamic geometric software. Pedagogical Objectives Improving skills, developing ICT and communication skills, fostering pupil's visualisation, spatial reasoning and geometric modelling. Process Pupils in both participating schools organise a walking pattern tour in the vicinity of each partner school, looking for geometrical patterns and taking photos of them. In particular, students look for geometrical patterns that occur naturally in everyday life. Teachers help, guide and monitor pupils in their first task of setting up the geometrical patterns. They organise a forum and chat sessions where students can show and talk about the information they have provided. Outcomes Pupils develop a range of artefacts for exchange between the participating schools and a set of drawn or reconstructed patterns using an open source dynamic geometric software (or other tools). Teachers organise worksheets for constructing project artefacts and their exhibit these in their schools and project TwinSpace and encourage pupils to propose ideas for new project tasks and topics. Tips The activity proposed is a part of three longer project kits: - Digital Interactive mathematics which deals with maths lessons using digital whiteboard in school activities;
- Polyglomath which isa collection of mathematical terms and worksheets to be shared using multilingual functions of the open source maths software Geogebra.
- The golden ratio which deals with the harmony and numerical and geometrical patterns in arts, science and everyday life.
