Tangram challenge
| What is a tangram? How can it be used to stimulate creativity in maths for your pupils? In this short and easy activitiy, pupils learn about tangrams in order to discover various mathematical representations and find fun ways to work and create dynamic shapes with the help of their partners. |
Age Group: 5 - 9 years Level: Easy Duration: 1 week ICT tools TwinSpace, Geogebra, Graphic software and web resources Pedagogical Objectives Improving ICT and internet communication skills; helping pupils to learn different mathematical representations and foster the concept of equivalence of figures. Process Pupils in each participating school use a sectioned square consisting of seven pieces to create a shape of some kind. The objective is to form a specific, unique shape with seven pieces. The shape must contain all pieces, without overlapping. They can draw this following the instructions on Wikipedia or using interactive web resources, such as this Geogebra tangram. Teachers help, guide students in their first task of setting up the geometrical shapes and provide them with the tools they need. They organise a forum and chat sessions where students can show and talk about their work. Outcomes Pupils develop a range of pictures or digital images, scanning the pictures or using Geogebra to exchange their works between the participating schools. They then have final discussions together about their shapes and formulate ideas for future projects tasks. Teachers organise and publish the final products in the TwinSpace. They then encourage their pupils to participate in final discussions and to create their own new project tasks and topics. Tips The activity proposed above is a part of two longer project kits: - Digital Interactive mathematics which deals with maths lessons using digital whiteboard in school activities;
- Polyglomath which is a collection of mathematical terms and worksheet to be shared using multilingual function of the open source maths software Geogebra.
