Meet me there!

Partner schools create a wiki or use the forum in the TwinSpace. Every page created is a suggestion for a Saturday evening entertainment activity, e.g., going to the movies, playing sports, going to a restaurant, having a party, etc. Pupils choose their favourite category, join the group of pupils who have chosen the same page and share their interests.

Age Group:     5-18 years
Level:              Easy
Duration:        3-6 hours
ICT tools:        TwinSpace, wiki, digital camera, scanner

Pedagogical Objectives

This is a good way to group pupils by their common interests.

Pupils:
  • Get to know each other and develop their communication skills.
  • Learn to share their interests and discuss about their hobbies and daily routines.
  • Start to communicate in an interactive way.
  • Participate in new situations, even if with a slight hesitation.
  • Improve their ICT and foreign language skills.

Process

Step 1

Teachers agree on the format of a blog or wiki to be used and guide pupils in how to use it. Pupils look at newspapers or online entertainment listings and draw up their favourites in a list. Pupils then upload their suggestions for a Saturday night entertainment activity and look at the suggestions of others.

Step 2

With the help of their teachers, pupils are grouped according to common interests and plan activities together, using either a chat or a blog.

Step 3

The partner pupils jointly publish a description of an ideal Saturday night, based on their work. They can then enrich the pages with details and photos regarding the subject.

Outcomes

Groups of pupils have started to communicate and collaborate with each other and an interactive web space where pupils upload material (photos, videos, texts) and discuss with their partners has been created.  This is an interesting introductory project/activity for eTwinning beginners.

Tips

Schools can also use this activity in order to choose a subject for an eTwinning project. By discussing their hobbies and daily routines, the pupils pinpoint their common interests and work together from this starting point.

This activity can also be used as part of a larger project. The topic can vary by adding more tasks, e.g., if the overall subject is about the Olympic Games, pupils can group themselves by their favourite games. The pupils then work on this basis, gathering information about their chosen game, its successful players, records, etc. At the end, the work is presented to the other groups. For elementary school, it is preferably the teachers, in collaboration with their pupils, who create the wiki or use the TwinSpace. Teachers should also help their pupils to start a conversation by preparing base questions, such as: why did you choose this category? How often do you out with your friends?
