Creating the ideal city
| Through drawings, general descriptions and/or detailed plans, pupils brainstorm together to create the idea city to live in. This activity helps pupils of both schools to understand the city or town in which their partners live, think creatively about the style and quality of life they would like for themselves in an interactive and creative process and to express themselves through art and design. |
Age group: 5-18 years Level: Easy Duration: 3 hours ICT Tools: TwinSpace, scanner Pedagogical Objectives On successful completion of this activity, pupils will be able to: - realise the differences between their towns and countries,
- express themselves though painting,
- realise the drawbacks of their town (if any),
- propose solutions for their town motivated by what their foreign partners have designed,
- develop his/her creativity.
Process Supposing that we have 24 pupils in the team (12 from each school) we separate a blank paper (A4 or bigger) to 24 squares. The paper should pass through all pupils using scanner and email. Each pupil should draw into a square an attribute that the ideal town should definitely have. In case the number of pupils is larger and it is difficult to handle the whole process, teachers can instead create smaller groups working in parallel and producing different drawings. Pupils should be inspired by the real attributes of their towns, e.g., a pupil from Sweden may choose to put a green space while a pupil from Greece chooses to puts a sun. Outcomes Pupils create an overall city picture designed collaboratively across borders. They learn about the differences and similarities that exist between partners and provide a base for further discussions and activities on similar projects. As a follow-up activity, pupils can describe in words and in structural plans just how exactly their ideal city will be. Tips References
