An interesting song!

Partner schools upload the music of traditional songs from their region and/or country in a common web space. Pupils in the partner school then write lyrics that are inspired by this music.

Age Group:     5-18 years
Level:            Intermediate
Duration:        3 days – 1 week
ICT tools:       Audacity, podcast generator

Pedagogical Objectives

Pupils improve their ICT skills in the area of media production. They come in touch with other cultural traditions and improve their communication and foreign language skills.

Process

Step 1

Brainstorm among pupils about traditional songs from their country. Let them choose one and find a recording of the music only, without the words. If there are any musicians in the class, they could play it. Record the music digitally using Audacity or another sound recording software.

Step 2

The partner classes then write lyrics to the music. This can be done in groups of two or three so that in the end there are several different versions of the song. The final songs can be recorded and uploaded as a sound file or as a podcast for the partners to listen to. The pupils can then comment on each other’s songs in a forum or blog.

Outcomes

The pupils create podcasts of traditional songs with new and original lyrics. Using a blog or forum, the pupils then interact with each other freely by commenting and discussing their musical compositions.
