Europe means a rich variety of cultures, means exchanging cultural ideas. Theatre (understood as literature, theatre building, way of performing) reflects this variety and this exchange of culture in the past and present. Acting on a stage allows the expression of one’s interests and feelings, opens up the possibility of trying out other peoples’ way of thoughts and behaviour, to develop a better understanding; and it allows an emotional and creative approach to the theme “being young in Europe”.Therefore our project will use acting as a bridge – a bridge which will connect students of different cultural backgrounds by demonstrating a part of their own culture and by learning about others; also as a bridge between the students of today and their cultural past: Thus they will find examples of existing fertile cultural relations among different European nations and countries. In the first year we will learn about and from each other. We will explore and compare various aspects of theatre in our countries. Thus we will learn about cultural connections all over Europe, but also learn to appreciate each country’s unique traditions. In the second year we will act together: We will compose a play together, using inspiration from the theatre traditions in all of our countries, and perform it.

· exploring both national and common cultural traditions and ideas, expressions and presentations (on the basis of the example ‘theatre’)
· searching for “anthropological constants”, such as ways of thinking and feeling (e.g. love, hate, fear, faith, insecurity, struggle for independence from the older generation, ...) which may have been the same among people of different times and places (for this research we will use theatre texts and practices from antiquity and one’s own country as a starting point)
· sharing the results of this research with partners from other countries and becoming aware of differences and similarities
· stimulating the interest in other cultures and ways of living and thinking and, at the same time,
· finding acceptance and appreciation of one’s own national and ethnic background .
Our aim is to improve the quality of education as well by giving our students an active part in this promotion since they will use theatre and acting as a Bridge. They will :
· carry out and evaluate the research mentioned above
· discuss their results with one another and with actors, stage-managers, dramatic advisers from the local environment
· test different methods of performing (e.g. shadow theatre, black light theatre, pantomime, commedia dell’arte, the ancient Greek way of using masks, music, etc.)
· decide about a topic which they will write a play of their own about (either by integrating scenes from their national literature into a new play – a kind of “European patchwork” – or by formulating a topic which by common agreemant is of interest to students from all of their countries)
· write this play together by communicating via email, our specific project website, etc.
· prepare and stage a common performance
· discuss a way of presenting this common performance to an audience in each of their countries (i.e. they will have to think about a language which can be understood everywhere – that could be body language, or English as lingua franca or a situative change between their mother languages -, and about the kind of performance – that could be a film for which every partner creates and acts a scene or it could be a “live” performance in one of the partner schools, recorded and shown in the other schools as a video documentation).
Further aims are :
· to improve the ability to communicate in a foreign language (English)
· to encourage the use of other foreign languages, which our students have learned
· to stengthen the ICT skills
