2008: The Year of Intercultural Dialogue

picture

To celebrate the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, two new eTwinning project kits have been developed for schools to run projects on this featured topic

2008 marks the Year of Intercultural Dialogue in Europe. The year aims to celebrate Europe’s diverse cultural identity and provide a platform for individuals in all countries to participate in a number of activities such as events, online debates and competitions.

As eTwinning is already deeply imbedded in intercultural dialogue with schools across Europe, two project kits have been created to give schools ideas on how to create eTwinning activities around this topic. The first kit provides an easy and fun way to discuss intercultural dialogue using body language while the second kit focuses on the issue of migration.

Project Kit 1:

How Do I Say ‘Thank You’?

Intercultural difference is not simply a question of language. Even if we know how to speak a foreign language we also know there are plenty of traps, which make real communication difficult because of cultural differences.

The objective of this kit is to invite primary school pupils to collect as many examples as possible of non-verbal communication, whether this be from what is observed in the classroom, playground or at home, or found from other sources, such as the Internet.

Project Kit 2:

How Did We Get Here? Stories of Migration

One of the great talking points of modern society is the question of migration. Some people regard it as a healthy social phenomenon, which allows for enrichment through change, while for others it provides the pretext for conflict with undertones of racism, and other extreme attitudes.

The project involves inviting a network of classes from as many schools as is practical to study together the migration of people who have left their birth place and have traveled to other parts of their own country or abroad for a multitude of different reasons to gain a better understand the reasons for emigration/ immigration and their impact on society.
